You may be wondering what I am talking about, but I discovered
something about this in my Bible reading a few weeks ago....and
it caused me to stop and think......
See, I came across this verse in Psalm 106..."Thus they changed
their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass." (vs.20)
Read it again.....I had to.
I know I read this many times before, but this time it intrigued me.
This whole chapter (106) talks about God's mercy to Israel. Mercy.
...now there's a whole other blog post....
The verse before this explains how they made the golden calf &
worshiped it. The word "changed" in verse 20 means to exchange.
So they exchanged God's glory for the "glory"(?) of a golden calf?
Yes, that's what they did.
My Bible had this cross reference...Jeremiah 2:11....here's where it
gets good! This chapter in Jeremiah deals with Israel's faithlessness.
The verse says, "Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no
gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth
not profit."
Do you see that? They changed their glory for something that would
not profit them.
I looked up some of these words and here is what I found.....
"changed" here means to alter, change or remove; and to dispose of.
So they threw away or removed their glory for that which would not
profit. But what was their glory you ask? I had the same thought.....
Strong's just said it was glory or honour.....so I went to good old
Webster's...."glory" means renown or something they were known for,
their distinguishing mark. Well, you know as well as I do, they were
known for being God's chosen people.
Back in Psalm 106:8 it says, "Nevertheless, he saved them for his
name's sake, That he might make his mighty power to be known."
So they were known as God's people. That was their glory. BUT...
they threw it away! They changed it to something that would not
profit! WOW!
Then I thought, how does this apply to me.....
Well, I am a Christian.....God's child. Some people know me by that.
Am I willing or wanting to throw that away for something that does
not or will not profit me? I have written in my journal about this....
My answer? "God forbid! I pray that I will always be what God wants
me to be ~ no matter what."
Times may get tougher.....Are you willing to change your glory for
something that will not profit?
