This seems to be a most interesting subject..... finding it.... knowing it....
doing it......
A few weeks ago in my Bible reading, I was learning about Hezekiah. If
you read about him in II Kings 18, you find he did that which was right
in God's sight.....he was a good king. But I wasn't reading about him in
II Kings, I was reading in Isaiah 37-39. It gives a few more details about
his life here... how he asked God to help the nation defeat the Assyrians,
a most wicked people, and God did! The angel of the Lord killed 185,000
in the night!
Then as chapter 38 begins, we read about the message from the Lord by
Isaiah that he was going to die. He ends up talking to God in a great
prayer we have recorded & begs God to let him live....this is where I
began to think....
Wouldn't I have done the same thing? I love life! I especially love my
family and I would want more time with them....so I probably would've
done what Hezekiah did and asked God to let me live a little longer.
What he was asking for was not wrong, it wasn't even sinful. Yet, this
is where God's will comes in.....he should've asked God if it was His will
for him to live longer. See, you know the story, in his last 15 years he had
a son who turned out to be THE most wicked king Judah had! Chapter 21
of II Kings starts off with Manasseh reigning at 12 years old......and verse 2
states how wicked he was. This young boy reigned 55 YEARS and did so
much wickedness, verse 16 tells it all...how he shed so much innocent
blood it filled Jerusalem!
So I came to this conclusion.....make sure that everything we ask God for
is asked according to His will! Some things seem all right to ask for, but
I want God's blessing on my life and I want His will for my life....even if
it would mean death. (Not trying to morbid, just stating a fact)
See, I want God to be glorified IN my life and BY my life. I read a
commentator that said how when the king of Babylon came (in chapter
20) Hezekiah missed his opportunity to give God glory... this was
another mistake he made after asking for his life to be prolonged....
Pastor preached about prayer a few months ago and one of his messages
was about whatever we ask God for, we should always include the fact
that we want it to be His will that is done.
So that's what I learned from the life of Hezekiah. I hope it was a
blessing to you and gives you something to think about as well....
